THE ALMANAC SPEAKS
PROF. INKSWORTH:

Not a winner of anything global — yet — but no minnow either: third at the very first World Cup, conquerors of England in 1950, and quarter-finalists in 2002. After the gut-punch of missing 2018, a young, Europe-hardened side comes home as co-host, captained by 38-year-old warhorse Tim Ream with Pulisic as its talisman. The Almanac files them under 'plucky upstart with a long memory and a bigger budget.'

  • Their best World Cup finish — third — came at the very first one in 1930, before most of the world had bothered to turn up.
  • In 1950 they beat England 1–0 and a London paper allegedly assumed the cabled score was a typo for 10–1. It was not.
  • They are the only side here whose footballers must explain, at home, which kind of football they play.
  • Co-hosts in 1994 and again in 2026 — the USA has a habit of throwing the party and then surprising the guests.
