⚡ DEFINING MOMENTS

▲ 2006 · A wink in Gelsenkirchen
Twenty-one and barely a year into the Portugal shirt, Ronaldo dispatched a quarter-final penalty to help see off England in a shoot-out, then glanced toward the bench. The wink became the tournament's lasting image; Portugal reached the semi-final and finished fourth.
▲ 2018 · The hat-trick against Spain
In Sochi he scored all three in a 3-3 draw with Spain, completing the set with a curling free-kick two minutes from time. At 33 he became the oldest man to score a World Cup hat-trick, and went on to four goals in the tournament before Uruguay halted Portugal in the last 16.
▲ 2022 · First to score at five editions
His penalty against Ghana made him the first man to find the net at five separate World Cups. It would be his only goal in Qatar; he was named among the substitutes for the knockout rounds and was on the bench as Morocco ended Portugal's run at the quarter-final.

THE ALMANAC SPEAKS
PROF. INKSWORTH:

Five World Cups, eight goals, and not one of them in a knockout match — the great paradox of a career otherwise drowning in records. The almanac files him under relentless rather than crowned: the finals never came, but neither did the surrender.

  • He has scored at five different World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022) — no man had managed that before him.
  • All eight of his World Cup goals arrived in the group stage; the knockout rounds have, so far, kept a clean sheet against him.
  • His 2018 treble against Spain made him, at 33, the oldest scorer of a World Cup hat-trick.
