⚡ DEFINING MOMENTS

▲ 1966 · Wiping his hands before the handshake
Captain at 25, he led England through Wembley to the final and beat West Germany 4–2 after extra time. Before climbing the steps to take the trophy from the Queen, he stopped to wipe the mud and sweat from his hands on the velvet balustrade — a small, exact courtesy that became one of the day's lasting images.
▲ 1970 · The tackle on Jairzinho
In the Guadalajara heat against the eventual champions Brazil, he produced a tackle of such clean timing on the surging Jairzinho that it is still taught as the model of how to dispossess a man without a foul. England lost the match 1–0 but the defending was untouchable, and Pelé later called him the finest defender he ever faced.
▲ 1970 · Cleared of a crime that never was
Days before the tournament he was arrested in Bogotá, accused of stealing a bracelet from a hotel jewellery shop — a charge later shown to be baseless. He was released, flew to Mexico, and captained England as if nothing had happened. The composure under it became part of the legend.

1973
Wins the last of his 108 England caps, having captained the side on 90 occasions — a record at the time.

THE ALMANAC SPEAKS
PROF. INKSWORTH:

He read the game a half-second before everyone else and tackled like a surgeon, which is how a man with modest pace and no goals to speak of became the defender the greats measured themselves against. The almanac records one title from three tournaments and not a single finals goal — proof that the most decisive contributions never reach the scoresheet. England's only champion captain, and still the standard.

  • Across three World Cups and 14 finals appearances he never scored — his only two England goals both came in friendlies in 1966.
  • Pelé, who swapped shirts with him in the Mexican sun in 1970, named him the greatest defender he ever played against.
  • He captained England a then-record 90 times and is the only man to lift the World Cup for the country.
