Aged 18, Messi came off the bench against Serbia and Montenegro, set up a goal and scored one of his own, becoming the youngest Argentine to feature at a World Cup. He then watched the quarter-final exit to Germany from the bench.

Messi carried Argentina to the final in Brazil, was named the tournament's best player, and lost it to Germany in extra time. The Golden Ball sat awkwardly beside a runners-up medal he plainly did not want.
