At his first World Cup he simply outscored everyone, plundering ten goals in six matches — including back-to-back hat-tricks against Bulgaria and Peru — to take the Golden Boot. West Germany fell to Italy in a delirious extra-time semi-final, the so-called Game of the Century, but Müller's haul stood for a generation.

In the final against the Netherlands' Total Football, with the score level, he half-turned on a sixpence inside the box and stabbed the ball home low past Jongbloed. It won West Germany the World Cup on home soil — and it was, by his own choosing, the last act of his international career.

He walked away from the national team immediately after lifting the trophy, aged 28 and still at his peak. He left as the World Cup's all-time leading scorer with fourteen goals, a record that would survive thirty-two years.

He was a poacher of impossible economy — squat, low to the ground, lethal inside the six-yard box from any angle and almost none. The almanac records two tournaments, fourteen goals and a title: the Golden Boot in 1970, and the goal that won it all in 1974, after which he simply stopped. Der Bomber said everything he needed to with his feet, and almost nothing with his words.
