Twenty-four and the understudy at right-back, he had appeared only off the bench in the knockout rounds when Jorginho limped out of the final against Italy after twenty-two minutes. He saw out the rest of a goalless afternoon in the Pasadena heat and was on the pitch as Brazil won the first World Cup final ever decided by a penalty shoot-out — his first winner's medal, earned in a supporting role.

By the tournament in the Far East he was Brazil's captain and its iron man, playing every minute of all seven matches as the side swept to the title. After the 2–0 win over Germany in Yokohama he climbed the podium to collect the trophy — the third final of his career and the one where he finally lifted it himself.

As the established right-back he opened every group game in France, but yellow cards caught up with him and he sat out the semi-final win over the Netherlands. He returned for the final, only for Brazil to be beaten 3–0 by the hosts on a strange night in Paris — the runner-up medal that breaks up his collection.
