▲ THE HIGH
2002 in Korea/Japan — Papa Bouba Diop's goal sank holders France in the opener and Senegal stormed to the quarter-finals on debut
▼ THE LOW
2018 in Russia — the first nation ever eliminated on the fair-play tiebreaker, level with Japan on every other measure

Three previous World Cups (2002, 2018, 2022); 2026 is Senegal's 4th. Quarter-finalists on debut in 2002 — still Africa's joint-best run at the tournament.

THE ALMANAC SPEAKS
PROF. INKSWORTH:

From a 2002 fairy tale that floored the world champions to a first continental crown in 2021, Senegal turned a generation of talent into Africa's standard-bearers. The Lions of Teranga roar with a record scorer, a Champions League goalkeeper and a captain on a farewell tour — pedigree, pace and a point to prove.

  • Teranga is the Wolof word for hospitality. The Lions are charming hosts right up until kickoff.
  • On their very first World Cup day in 2002 they beat the reigning champions. Most nations would settle for that as a whole career.
  • Senegal once went out of a World Cup without losing a single tiebreaker that mattered — except the very last one. The fair-play rule has rarely been so cruel.
  • Papa Bouba Diop's habit of dancing around his folded shirt remains the most-copied goal celebration the Lions ever produced. The Almanac approves.
