COACH Rudi Garcia · France · since 2025 Appointed in January 2025, succeeding Domenico Tedesco — his first job as a national-team manager after Lille, Roma, Marseille and Napoli; remembered fondly in Belgium for Lille's 2011 league-and-cup double.
CAPTAIN Youri Tielemans Handed the armband by Garcia, inheriting it from the retired golden-generation core (Hazard, Witsel, Alderweireld).

The squad's bolt from the blue — a teenage Lille winger (b. 2005) with barely two caps, named on raw pace and fearlessness alone. The one to set an alarm for.

⭐ HALL OF FAME

PLAYERPOSERACAPSGLSFILE NOTE
Jan Vertonghen #5 CB 2007–2024 157 10 Record caps. A decade and a half of quiet excellence at the back; never knowingly out of position.
Eden Hazard #10 AM 2008–2022 126 33 The golden generation's jewel — Silver Ball at 2018, and Belgium's most dangerous man with the ball at his feet.
Romelu Lukaku #9 FW 2010– 126 90 All-time top scorer by a distance. Belgium's record is essentially the Lukaku goal column.
Kevin De Bruyne #7 MF 2010– 119 37 A passing range mapped by satellite. The metronome the whole golden era was tuned to.
Paul Van Himst #10 FW 1960–1974 81 30 Voted Belgian Player of the Century in 1995 — the standard everyone after him was measured against.
Jan Ceulemans #10 FW 1977–1991 96 23 Captain of the 1980 Euro final and the 1986 fourth-place run; the most-capped Belgian of his age.
Enzo Scifo #10 AM 1984–1998 84 18 The playmaker of four World Cups and three Golden Shoes; the brain of the 1986 semi-finalists.
Jean-Marie Pfaff #1 GK 1976–1987 64 0 Among the best keepers of the 1980s; the wall behind the 1986 semi-final side.
Marc Wilmots #9 FW 1990–2002 70 28 Mr Reliable in front of goal across three World Cups; later returned as the manager.
Thibaut Courtois #1 GK 2011– 109 0 A modern giant in goal — when fit, comfortably one of the best on the planet.
THE ALMANAC SPEAKS
PROF. INKSWORTH:

A footballing country that punches improbably above its size — the only side ever to sit atop the world ranking without a trophy to show for it. The golden generation came agonisingly close in 2018 and is mostly retired now, but a De Bruyne in midfield and a Courtois in goal still make Belgium nobody's idea of a soft draw. The trophy cabinet is thin; the highlight reel is anything but.

  • Belgium are the only nation ever to be ranked world No. 1 without having won a World Cup or a continental title. They will not be reminded of the second half of that sentence.
  • They played the opening match of the entire World Cup story in 1930 — and lost it 3–0. Someone has to go first.
  • Their one undisputed gold is from the 1920 Olympics, sealed when the opposition walked off mid-final. A win is a win, and the Almanac records it as such.
  • Three official languages, one nickname: Red Devils, Rode Duivels, Diables Rouges. The devils, helpfully, are the same in all three.
