▲ 1958 · A keeper who left the goal-line
On his World Cup debut in Sweden he was already doing what almost no goalkeeper of the era dared — sweeping behind his defence, commanding his box, throwing rather than booting to launch attacks. The Soviets reached the quarter-finals before the hosts saw them off 2-0, and the watching world had found its first modern goalkeeper.

No goalkeeper had ever won European football's individual crown, and none has since. In 1963 the voters made an exception for the man in black, whose shot-stopping and presence had quietly redrawn what the position could be. It remains the loneliest line on his honours list.
▲ 1966 · Captain at the fourth-place play-off
England 1966 was the Soviet Union's deepest World Cup run, a fourth-place finish, and Yashin's last tournament on the pitch. He wore the armband for the third-place play-off against Portugal, a 2-1 defeat, and bowed out as the goalkeeper every other goalkeeper had been measured against for a decade.

Across three tournaments the almanac records 13 appearances and a best of fourth in 1966, but the real ledger is the role itself: the sweeper-keeper who claimed his box, started attacks, and made the position a craft. The Black Spider remains the only goalkeeper ever to win the Ballon d'Or, and the trophy for the best keeper at each World Cup now bears his name.
