⚡ DEFINING MOMENTS

▲ 2018 · Named, then left at home
A teenager already trusted at Real Madrid, Valverde was carried in Uruguay's provisional 26 for Russia but cut from the final 23. He watched the 2018 finals from outside the camp — a footnote that explains why his World Cup ledger opens four years later than his talent suggested it might.
▲ 2022 · Three matches, no reward
In Qatar he started all three of Uruguay's group games — a goalless draw with South Korea, defeat to Portugal, a 2-0 win over Ghana that arrived too late. Uruguay finished level on points with Ghana and South Korea and went out on goals scored. Valverde, by then one of Europe's most coveted midfielders, left the tournament having played every minute and changed nothing.

THE ALMANAC SPEAKS
PROF. INKSWORTH:

A midfielder built for the grandest club nights, yet his one World Cup amounted to three goalless matches and a group-stage door closing on goals scored. The finals have so far asked little of him and received less in return. The trophies in his cabinet are nearly all in club colours.

  • Cut from Uruguay's final 2018 squad, he did not reach a World Cup until 2022 — by which point he was already a Champions League winner.
  • Uruguay went out of Qatar 2022 on goals scored despite beating Ghana on the final day; Valverde started every group match.
  • His nicknames trace a promotion of sorts — from 'Pajarito', the little bird, to 'El Halcón', the falcon.
