⚡ DEFINING MOMENTS

▲ 2018 · Russia, in the shadow of Kyiv
Three weeks after a wrenched shoulder ended his Champions League final early, Salah sat out Egypt's opening defeat to Uruguay, then returned to convert a penalty against the hosts in Saint Petersburg. It was Egypt's first World Cup goal in 28 years, and small consolation in a 3-1 loss.
▲ 2018 · A chip, and an early exit
Against Saudi Arabia in Volgograd, Salah dinked a finish over the goalkeeper for his second goal of the tournament. Egypt lost 2-1 and went home pointless, the burden of a nation's expectation having rested almost entirely on one half-fit forward.

THE ALMANAC SPEAKS
PROF. INKSWORTH:

A finisher of rare consistency for his club, yet his single World Cup remains a frustration: two penalties, two defeats watched from a body not quite mended. The finals have never seen the best of him. History records the goals; it also records the shoulder.

  • His two goals in 2018 were Egypt's first at a World Cup since 1990 — a 28-year wait ended by a half-fit man.
  • Egypt have reached only three World Cups since debuting in 1934 as the first African and Arab side at the finals; Salah featured in one of them.
  • He arrived in Russia carrying a shoulder injury from the Champions League final and missed the opening fixture — then scored in both matches he played.
