Seventeen years old, Pelé scored twice in the 5-2 win over the hosts in the Stockholm final — the first a flick over a defender's head before the volley — and became the youngest man to win the World Cup. He had already struck a hat-trick against France in the semi-final.
▲ 1962 · A title he barely played
He scored against Mexico, then tore a thigh muscle shooting against Czechoslovakia in the second game and watched the rest from the touchline as Amarildo deputised and Brazil retained the trophy. By the rules of the day he received no medal; the almanac notes it took until 2007 for one to reach him.
▲ 1970 · The team that defined the game
Back to full pomp in Mexico, he scored in the 4-1 final win over Italy and laid on Carlos Alberto's closing goal. A near-miss header against England and an audacious dummy against Uruguay's keeper became the tournament's signatures, even though neither found the net.
