Born in Madrid to Moroccan parents, Hakimi chose the country of his family and arrived in Russia as one of the tournament's youngest defenders. Morocco lost their first two group games — an own goal to Iran, a Ronaldo header for Portugal — then salvaged a 2-2 draw with Spain before going home, but the teenager had announced himself at full-back on the biggest stage.
